I am a mother of a boy. When he was 2 years old, he began his ‘obsession’ with Thomas the Train. Normally speaking, a toy might hold a child’s interest for 10 minutes to a month, but that was not the case with the Thomas the Train toys. My son literally woke up with the desire to play with these toys, and went to bed thinking about these toys. In fact, he played with Thomas the Train toys just about every day until he was about 4 ½ years old! Now that’s value!
Now I admit… I fed the obsession, because I knew how much he loved his trains. I would purchase a train here and there, buy more tracks, and buy the cool little buildings. We had both the wooden sets and the die cast sets.
I’d sometimes bribe him with a toy as well. For instance, I had an unopened Thomas the Train toy sitting on the bathroom waiting to be opened. He could only open it once he started going potty by himself. ( Yes… Thomas the Train helped potty train my child! )
My son knew all the Thomas the Train characters by name. He learned all kinds of train lingo from the Thomas the Train videos, such as ‘coupling the engines’. He had a great time creating new tracks and lining up his engines.
My son had a very little Thomas the Train catalog, that he would page through each day. I saved that worn catalog, and it now holds a place in his scrapbook.
He is now 9, and has outgrown his Thomas the Train set. ( Now the obsession is legos). I lent all the Thomas the Train stuff to my sister who has a young son. I told her I wanted it back afterwards, as I want to pass these toys onto my grandkids some day. That’s still at least 15 years away, since my son is just 9. I’m sure many more kids will play with toys before he has his own kids.
